SHIMA – ISLAND ( JAPANESE )
A collaboration between KUA and the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), the SHIMA: Okinawa-Hawaiʻi STEM Education Collaborative was a joint STEM education workshop for high school students in Okinawa and Hawaiʻi
While initially planned as an in-person summer student exchange until COVID-19 concerns made travel from Okinawa to Hawaiʻi impossible, we were still able to connect and provide a meaningful exchange virtually.
The Hawaiʻi program, which included a five week online lecture series from May–July 2021, provided an opportunity for ʻōpio (youth) from across the paeʻāina to connect with and learn from experts in the field of limu, including professionals and practitioners from both academia and the community.
Cross-cultural shareback and learning with the Okinawa student cohort highlighted the connections between our island cultures, resources, and traditional natural resources management practices while encouraging interest in limu and the fields of science and technology. We look forward to other opportunities to connect with our SHIMA friends in the coming year.
